The labourers were working for the restoration of a water body at Ranaghat Raghunathpur under the 100-days MGNREGA scheme when they found a four feet statue of Lord Vishnu, the sources said.
District Magistrate Abhinav Chandra said "our magistrate was sent to the spot to look into the matter. We have also informed the Heritage Department and Information and Cultural Affairs Department about the discovery of the statue."
When the labourers were digging, a labourer found something hard below the ground. On further digging he found the statue of Lord Vishnu. But the nose of the statue was broken as the labourers spade hit it, the sources added.
