Steamer's engine fails midstream, 40 rescued

Forty people, stranded in a river in heavy rains after the engine of their steamer failed midstream, were rescued by the district administrartion this afternoon.

The steamer, ferrying 40 people, was heading to Biswan in Sitapur district from Mahsi in Bahraich when its engine failed midstream on river Ghaghara, district official Harish Chandra said.

The passengers were stuck up in the steamer in heavy rains for several hours, he said.

The district administration launched a rescue operation with the help PAC personnel and locals and rescued all of them, the official said.
