Stenographer from caste verification department held for bribe

A caste verification department staff from Konkan Bhavan in Navi Mumbai was arrested on Monday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe for issuing a certificate to an applicant, anti-corruption bureau (ACB) officials said today.

PI ACB Thane Division Hemant Patil, informed that the complainant's wife, who was to get a promotion, had applied for caste verification certificate with the Caste Verification officer of Navi Mumbai.

The stenographer allegedly demanded Rs 45,000 from the complainant for issuing the certificate, the ACB official said.

After negotiations it was agreed that a sum of Rs 30,000 would be paid for issue of the certificate. The complainant approached ACB Thane unit which laid a trap on Monday and arrested the accused while allegedly accepting the bribe amount from the complainant, informed Patil.
