"Police played a major role in improving law and order and bringing back peace in the state," Gogoi said at a function organised to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Indian police here.

The chief minister said "Our government has taken a number of steps to address the grievances of the police force. We are working to give a new and modern look to the police force."

Gogoi said events like parades and imbibing of knowledge about rules and regulation were important for instilling discipline in the police.

Terming the performance of the state police in various sporting events as noteworthy, Gogoi said personnel excelling in such events would be given adequate recognition.

Lauding the recently raised woman's commando unit 'Virangana', Gogoi said women personnel were moving in step with their male counterparts.

Various wings of the police displayed their skills during the event including a motorcycle daredevil show and unarmed combat.
