Steps taken to prevent pachyderms entering villages

The department of Forest and Environment of Jharkhand government has taken preventive measures in Ramgarh district's Gola block to stop elephants from entering villages, a forest official said today.

"The department has taken a number of preventive measures in Gola block that include trench and fencing in the forest to stop tuskers from entering the villages," Divisional Forest Officer A K Singh said here.

He said the department has sanctioned Rs 31.60 lakh as compensation for dependents of tusker attack victims for 2013-14 in Ramgarh district.

Out of the amount, Rs 16.67 lakh was disbursed as compensation to the relatives of those who lost their lives in elephant attacks, he said.
 

The compensation also included destruction of crops and houses, he added.
