STF arrests wanted criminal, his accomplice

A man, wanted by Bihar and Uttar Pradesh police in 23 criminal cases and carrying a total cash reward of Rs 60,000 on his head, has been arrested along with his accomplice following an encounter with Special Task Force (STF) here.

Sumit Kumar Singh alias Monu Chavanni, and his accomplice Chandrika Sahni alias Pappu Sahni were nabbed after an encounter from Kukrail embankment in Mahanagar police station area last night on specific information. The duo had gone there to exchange weapons with their contacts, a senior official said.

Singh was carrying a cash reward of Rs 50,000, declared by the UP government, and Rs 10,000 by the Bihar government on his head, he said.
 

Singh had shot dead the spokesman of local BJP MP in Bihar's Siwan district on November 23, 2014, along with two others, who were later arrested.

He had lately been demanding "rangdari' from about a dozen people including a political person and trader in Gopalganj, the senior official said.

One carbine 9MM, a .32 bore pistol, a country-made weapon 315 bore, two mobile phones and cartridges were recovered from their possession, he said.

Singh has 23 criminal cases in different districts of UP and Bihar pending against him.
