Government Railway Police arrested a 40-year-old woman from Nalasopara in neighbouring Palghar district Tuesday and rescued a two-year-old boy she had allegedly abducted.

The woman was identified as Parvatidevi Vishwakarma, said a GRP official.

On Sunday, she allegedly abducted a two-year-old boy from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus here, the official said.

The boy

and his mother were going to board a train for their native place in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district.

When the mother, waiting for her husband, fell asleep, Vishwakarma allegedly lifted the child and ran away.

When the mother woke up, she realised that the boy was missing and approached police.

Railway police examined CCTV footage of suburban railway stations and spotted Vishwakarma and child getting down at Nalasopara, the official said.

Following a tip-off from an auto rickshaw driver, a GRP team traced Vishwakarma's address in Tulinj area of Palghar and arrested her and rescued the child.

Vishwakarma allegedly told police that she stole the boy as she was childless.

The boy was handed over to his mother.
