Diamonds worth over Rs 2 crore which were allegedly stolen from a city-based export firm here have been recovered and two persons have been arrested in this connection, police said today.

Owner of the firm Shree Ram Krishan (SRK) Exports had registered a complaint with the police alleging that their courier boy, Sagar Ramesh Kapuriya, had on Tuesday decamped with rough diamonds collectively weighing 2,500 carats and estimated to be worth Rs 2.07 crore.

"Police last night arrested two persons - Bhavesh Kapuriya and Harshad Rakholiya - for allegedly helping their friend and main accused Sagar Kapuriya in stealing the rough diamonds from SRK Exports in Katargam area of the city," Surat city in-charge police commissioner C R Parmar told reporters here.

The diamonds were subsequently seized from a construction site in Surat's Dahej town, where the duo had hidden them, Parmar said.

Police have also collected crucial CCTV footage from the diamond firm which has captured Kapuriya allegedly taking away the precious gemstones from the company's office.

Kapuriya, who had been working as a courier for SRK Exports for three years, was given the task of supplying rough diamonds to another unit of the firm on Tuesday. He collected the diamonds from the company's office, but did not hand it over to other units, the complaint said.

Meanwhile, the two persons arrested have been booked under IPC sections 408 (criminal breach of trust) along with 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), Parmar said adding that a search was on to nab the main accused in the case.
