Stolen sandalwood worth Rs 2 cr recovered, 3 held

Police today arrested three persons, including a woman, here and recovered six tonnes of stolen sandalwood worth Rs two crore from them.

Acting on a tip-off, the police nabbed two robbers from Dharda road here. On their instance police recovered the stolen sandalwood, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sapan Sharma, said.

The ACP said during questioning Sukhdev Singh and Jagdish Singh Bagga revealed that their mother Parmjit Kaur was also involved in the crime.

She also has been arrested, the police official said.

Sharma said a sandalwood-laden vehicle was stolen in November last when Sanjeev Kumar, a Delhi-based trader, had brought 8 tonnes of sandalwood from the national capital.
 

Five persons, including two Ludhiana-based wood dealers, hoodwinked him and disappeared with the vehicle when he stopped-by for lunch on Chandigarh road.

Kumar had registered an FIR in this regard following which a Special Investigating Team was formed to trace the vehicle and the accused, the ACP said.

Sharma said two tonnes of stolen sandal wood is yet to be recovered. Police is on a look out for two of the accomplices who stole the sandalwood, he said.
