Mild tension prevailed near Charminar in the Old City today after a group of youngsters soon after coming out of Mecca Masjid after the noon prayers allegedly indulged in stone pelting, police said.

"While returning after the prayers and proceeding towards Moghalpura area, a group pelted stones on some shops and few vehicles in the area and police immediately intervened and dispersed them. No one was injured in the incident," a senior police officer said and termed it as a minor incident of stone pelting.

"The situation is totally under control and peaceful," he said.

The police officer refused to comment when asked if the stone pelting incident was in protest against Wednesday's Kishanbagh communal clashes in which three persons were killed in police firing.

Shops and business establishments near Charminar and adjoining areas remained closed and were subsequently opened even as the city police made elaborate security arrangements and deployed a large number of personnel in sensitive locations.

Meanwhile, curfew remained in force for the third-day consecutive day today under Rajendranagar police station limits after rioting broke out between two communities in Sikh Chavni and Arsh Mahal areas of Kishanbagh in Old City that was sparked off by alleged burning of a religious flag.

"The curfew is continuing and no untoward incident has been reported," another police officer said.

So far, 10 cases have been registered and 23 persons were arrested in connection with the communal clashes.
