Former Attorney-General Soli Sorabjee today asked the civil society to mount pressure to stop a person framed for criminality from contesting elections until he was absolved of charges as the Election Commission lacks power to disallow such a candidate.

"The civil society should mount pressure to stop a person framed for criminality to fight elections unless the person is absolved of the charges as the EC lacks power to disallow such a candidate," he said in an interaction here.

He said a person facing a criminal charge in respect of serious offences should not be eligible to stand for election. "...This the Election Commission has recommended to the Law Commission but somehow this change in law has not been brought about," he rued.
