Married at the age of 12, Noor Jahan became a widow at the age of 20 with three children to look after.
Going against the advice of relatives and neighbours in her Sangli village of Maharashtra, Noor decided not to remarry and instead eke out a living by doing household chores for others. She also had to face criticism for her decision to cast off her burqa.
Noor and several women like her are featured on the women-centric show, "Stree Shakti" a one-hour programme on DD National that portrays women, who have gone through difficulties to become achievers in their own right.

The show include some well-known faces of film, music and television industry.
Mona Khot, the producer of the show, considers it to be a platform for women to live their dreams.
The series is based on the real life struggles of victims of acid attack, domestic violence etc.
"This show is about empowerment of women. The show features the victims of domestic violence, acid attack and other such evils in the society. The struggle of these women are shown in the show to inspire the women who are scared or shy to bring out their problems in public," says Mona.
A documentary filmmaker for the past 18 years Mona, says she wants to create awareness and inspire others to fight for their rights.
"I have been working in this field from the past 18 years. I have real life instances which are very inspiring. I thought that if these are so inspiring to me, they can be the same to others. Through this show I attempt to inspire people and create awareness," she says.
Mona says she did extensive research for the show.
