A black buck was killed by stray dogs near Banapalli in Ganjam district, forest officials said today.

The eight-year-old injured male black buck succumbed to its injuries at Balipadara veterinary hospital yesterday, said Forest Ranger (Buguda) Dhabaleswar Pradhan.

"Stray dogs generally attack a weak black buck which cannot run for its life," said Pradhan.

According to July 2011 census, there are 2,181 black bucks in Aska, Buguda, Polasara, Khallikote and Berhampur forests compared to 1,672 in 2008.

"We are taking all possible measures to ensure safety of black bucks. Patrolling has been intensified in the area", the forest ranger said.
