Stray elephant kills man

A 50-year-old man was killed when a stray elephant flung him to the ground near his house in Jalpaiguri district on Wednesday, a forest department official said.

The animal came out of Apalchand forest and reached Uttar Bargharia village in Malbazar block in the morning.

At that time, Mohammad Habul was just outside his house in the village and the elephant saw him, Ranger of Apalchand, Sudipta Sarkar, said.

The jumbo drew Habul with its trunk and flung him to the ground seriously injuring him.

The elephant then fled after the local people raised an alarm.

Habul died on the way to hospital, Sarkar said adding that his family will be compensated as per rules.
