Street crime in the national capital registered a 17.26 per cent decline in 2016, a report by the Delhi Police said today.
A total of 9,571 cases of snatching were reported in 2016 and 35.15 per cent cases were solved with the arrest of 4,601 persons, the report said.
It revealed that over 94 per cent of the arrested persons were first time offenders while nearly 54 per cent were illiterate or school drop-outs.

"Dynamic system of picket checking has been introduced with an element of surprise with revamping and reactivating of special cells against snatching and auto theft in south zone," the report stated.
Special patrolling is organised after analysing the crime trend in affected areas and joint checking with local police, PCR and traffic personnel have been conducted regularly at various pickets and identified police stations in south zone, it said.
"Extensive checking of two wheelers has resulted in reduction of street crimes by 45.97 per cent in robbery and 9.99 per cent in snatching in the south zone," the report stated.
In north zone, aggressive checking of two wheelers after an analysis of the crime in the area showed that most of the street crimes were committed by criminals riding motor cycles and scooters.
The policemen in the zone launched a targeted campaign to stop and check all the motor cycles and scooters with riders and pillion in the age bracket with the "highest propensity" to commit crime.
"The move has led to a decline in street crime in north zone areas by 13 per cent, going down from over 11,080 in 2015 to 9,628 in 2016," the report added.
