Sarojini Nagar mini Market Association Vice President Prem Goel claimed that "we were yesterday assured by the NDMC that more vendors would not be allowed to sit, but they have not kept their promise."
The shopkeepers and vendors in the market today shut shop in protest agains the notification issued by the NDMC for draw of lots, adding that the market will be shut for an indefinite period.
According to Supreme Court orders already 68 street vendors are allowed to use the market premises till 7 PM, Goel said.
"There is no space for additional street vendors in the market. It's a threat to the existing vendors and is unacceptable" Goel added.
The welfare association will make a written plea to MP Ajay Maken and the Chief Minister tomorrow.
Earlier on 28 April, National Association of Street Vendors of India had approached the Supreme Court seeking immediate halt on proposed lottery by NDMC for allotment of sites to street vendors.
The petition argues that the proposed conduct of draw of lottery would jeopardise the right to livelihood of those who would not be short listed in the draw of lot.
