Strike called by hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Geelani against the spurious drug trade in Kashmir evoked little response in the Valley today.

Barring the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas, shops and business establishments in most of Kashmir remained open, official sources said.

Public and private transport was plying on the roads normally, while attendance in government offices and banks was also nearly normal, they said.

Schools, however, remained closed as a precautionary measure in view of the past incidents of stone pelting targeting the school buses, they said.

Geelani had called for a general strike to protest against the alleged supply of spurious drugs to government hospitals.

He has also demanded registration of a case against the then Health Minister of the state and the officials incharge of procuring drugs for government hospitals.
