Fish trade in this island remained paralysed for the fifth day today with the mechanised fishing boat owners boycotting fishing operations for the fifth day today demanding among other things steps to secure the release of 16 fishremen arrested by the Sri Lankan navy last month.
They were also demanding the release of three boats seized by the navy and compensation for the damaged boats.
Fishermen Association leader S Emiret said about 2500 fishermen were on the strike.
The fishermen suggested that the Centre should take on lease the traditional fishing areas in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait and allow them to fish there, Emiret said.
