Striking fishermen suspend agitation

The fishermen of 18 hamlets in Tarangambadi area in the dsitrict who were on hunger strike since yestersday demanding fishing harbour suspended their agitation today after talks with the District Collector.

Traders in Tarangambadi area today downed shutters showing solidarity with the striking fishermen.

The fishermen had pointed out that the AIADMK, in its poll campaigns during the 2011 assembly and 2014 Lok Sabha elections, had promised that a fishing harbour would be set up at Tarangambadi. But, no action was taken, they alleged.

Nagapattinam District Collector S Palanisamy held talks with the striking fishermen. After the talks the fishermen called off their agitation temporarily, association leaders said.
