Several student activists protested outside the Vasant Vihar police station today alleging police "inaction" in the rape of a 14-year-old Manipuri girl in Munirka area.

Activists of All India Students Association, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' and Northeast Students Union protested the incident, which came just days after the death of a youth from the Northeast in an alleged racist attack.

JNUSU president Akbar Chawdhary said, "It was only after hours of protest by around 500 students and citizens at the police station that the police finally filed the FIR...We have been told that the culprit has been booked.

"JNUSU condemns in strongest terms this growing trend of racial and sexual violence against the people of Northeast in the national capital," he said.

The JNUSU leader also criticised political parties, saying they made "condemnation noises" as popular protest snowballed against in Nido's murder, but did not recognise the deep-seated racial and anti-women prejudices that dominate the social psyche, the security agencies, police and politics.

"The ruling parties refused to be accountable for the highly condemnable police inaction, inefficiency and orchestrated cover-up that local police routinely display in dealing with such cases of racist and sexual violence," he said.

The incident comes close on the heels of the death of Nido Tania, a youth from Arunachal Pradesh, who was purportedly beaten to death here a few days ago by some shopkeepers following a quarrel over taunts on his hairstyle.
