Bhukkal, who visited the University in Sonepat district, about 200 km from here, said that the government is committed to providing protection and welfare of girl students.

She met Vice-Chancellor of the University, Pankaj Mittal and also interacted with students there to have a first-hand account of their problems.

Later after deliberation with the varsity administration, she asked them to look into the problems of students immediately and take steps for their redressal.

Speaking to reporters in Sonepat, Bhukkal said that the police had nabbed three accused involved in the assault on the varsity's first-year law student.

The minister, who visited the hostels of the University, said the students were satisfied with the action taken by the varsity authorities and police.

The students had been on a protest after the 19-year-old student alleged that she was abducted near the campus on Wednesday by four youths and gang raped in a nearby field.

Three of the accused, including the in-charge of the hostel mess of the University, were arrested later.

Among other demands of the agitating students included suspension of the Vice-Chancellor.
