A group of students from the US and north Indian varsities today witnessed Tamilian culture and tradition as they participated in Pongal celebrations at a farm in Kaliyapuram near Pollachi in the district.

Some students and faculty from Cornell University, in the US, and post-graduate and PhD scholars from Banaras and Assam universities participated in the celebrations, organised jointly by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and Iswaryam Organics.

Women at the farm demonstrated how to make pongal, a delicacy made of new rice with jaggery, in a decorated mud pot and all the students then joined them in preparing and tasting it, a TNAU release said.

A local farmer demonstrated the popular martial arts Silambattam to the students. They later participated in the 'Kummiyattam,' folk dance performed by village women.
