Students gherao Visva-Bharati Vice-Chancellor

The students of the secondary schools of Visva-Bharati and their parents gheraoed the vice-chancellor and other higher officials of the university demanding scrapping of the newly-introduced admission policy, the police said.

They did not let the vice-chancellor Sushanta Duttagupta and three senior officials to leave the central office till 11 pm, the police said.

A scuffle broke out when the acting registrar, Manimukut Mitra, tried to leave the office in the evening, officials said.

Hundreds of students and their parents had been agitating against the admission policy that stopped the "internal quota" system for the school students while getting admitted in the higher classes in the college and university.
 

The school students used to get advantage at the time of admission to higher classes for this system, university officials said adding that a child getting admitted in class-I has the opportunity to finish PhD from here.

Meanwhile, President of Bangladesh, Abdul Hamid, would reach here tomorrow and the Pous Mela, started by Rabindranath Tagore's father, would begin early tomorrow morning.
