Popular as a cosmetic therapy to remove facial frown lines, botox is being increasingly tried out in West as a medication for chronic migraine.

"This is why we intended to evaluate its effect in Indian migraine patients. Chronic migraine is a disabling condition adding to significant healthcare costs and patient morbidity. Our aim is to conduct observational study on effect of bottulinum toxin in migraine. It will be carried out by Command hospital in Lucknow," Lt Gen Mandeep Singh, Director General, Hospital Services in the armed forces said.

A migraine is a common type of headache that may occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. In many people, a throbbing pain is felt only on one side of the head.

He said that patients suffering from chronic migraine are usually on a combination of short acting drugs for acute relief like NSAIDS, Triptans and Ergot preparations and also long-term prophylactic therapy with beta-blockers, anti-convulsants tri-cyclic etc.

Not all patients get relief, he said.
