Panchmahal district police have arrested a police sub-inspector on the charge of dereliction of duty for allegedly altering an FIR filed by a tribal woman on a complaint of rape.

Superintendent of Police Raghavendra Vatsa said that PSI AU Gadhvi was yesterday arrested from his relative's house here. He had been absconding ever since Panchmahal police lodged an FIR against him three months back, the SP said.

"Three months back, we filed an FIR against him (Gadhvi) for discarding an FIR in a rape case and lodging a bogus FIR to help the accused when he was posted at Shahera police station in 2011," said Vatsa.

The tribal woman's complaint had been transferred to the police station where Gadhvi was posted.

"When Gadhvi saw the FIR, he tore it up and filed another complaint, in which, he changed several facts and names of the accused. When the matter came to light, the then SP suspended Gadhvi. However, he got reinstated and managed to get a posting at Shahera," said Vatsa.

"When I took over, I received an application demanding action against Gadhvi. Thus, we lodged a complaint against him in the same police station three months back. But he then took leave and absconded," the SP added.
