An Assam Police sub-inspector was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000 in Nalbari district on Tuesday, police said.

SI Panbendra Das, in-charge of Dhamdhoma police outpost under Ghoghrapara Police Station, was caught by an Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) team led by deputy superintendent of police when he was accepting the alleged bribe amount from complainant Hussain Ali, a police spokesman said.

The accused had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 for providing relaxation in a cross case, he said.

The complainant had already paid the first "instalment" of Rs 4,000 yesterday, the spokesman said.

The official added that the complainant was the father of a recent rape victim, who is a minor. The accused in the rape case was arrested by district police and the family of the arrested accused had filed a cross case relating to a loan matter against the father of the rape victim.

The sub-inspector of the police outpost was allegedly threatening the rape victims economically challenged father with arrest at a time when he has arranged the marriage of his elder daughter, the police spokesman said.

The complainant then approached the ACB in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption and a trap was laid as per standard procedure, the spokesman added.

The sub-inspector has been arrested and will be forwarded to a special court on Wednesday, he said.
