Sub-inspector mowed down by speeding truck

A 55-year-old Delhi Police Sub-Inspector was mowed down by a speeding truck late last night in Outer Delhi's Alipur area.

The errant truck driver, identified as Rajat Kumar (19) has been arrested. The vehicle was heading toward Himachal Pradesh from Delhi.

According to the police, the incident took place around 10:30 PM last night when the victim, identified as Hazarilal, posted at the Bhalaswa Dairy police station in North-West district, was on his way to Narela on his motorcycle. He was on duty when the incident took place.

"As he reached near Shani temple and stopped his bike at Alipur red light, the speeding truck came from behind and mowed him down killing him on the spot. There was a police picket just 50 meters from the spot and cops posted there chased the truck in a van, intercepted it and nabbed the driver," said a senior police official.
 

Kumar was arrested and the truck has been impounded. A case of rash and negligent driving and other relevant sections have been registered in this regard.

Hazarilal was inducted in the the Delhi Police in 1977. He hails from Sonepat town of Haryana. His family resides in his native village but he lived in the residential quarters of the Bhalaswa Dairy police station.

On Saturday night, an Assistant Sub-Inspector and a constable of the Delhi Police were killed while another was seriously injured when a drunk cab driver rammed his speeding car into the barricades manned by them in Kalindi Kunj area of south-east Delhi.

Seven policemen have lost their lives and 17 were seriously injured till December 15 this year while two cops were killed and 13 were injured in the entire 2013.
