Sub-junior national hockey ch'ship from Saturday

Teams from 21 states will compete in the fourth sub-junior, boys under 16, national hockey championship, beginning in the city from May 10.

The Division B tournament will be played on league-cum knock-out basis and teams have been divided into four groups.

The teams from Assam, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Sports Authority of India, Vidarbha, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Puducherry, Citizens Hockey, Bengal, Uttarakhand, Goa, Odisha, Mumbai, Gujarat, Tripura and Andaman & Nicobar are taking part in this tournament.

Briefing newsmen here today, RV Shelar Secretary of Gujarat State Hockey Association said, "Gujarat is hosting its first national sub-junior hockey tournament in which 378 players, 42 coaches/managers, 20 national and international umpires will take part in this prestigious tournament."
 

Shelar said two selectors from Hockey India will be present during the competition for selecting sub-junior Indian hockey team.

"We are looking for corporate sponsors and I hope they support us in reviving the national game in the state."

Nilesh Patel, Chairman of the tournament said, "We are happy to host a national tournament. Hockey has taken a beating in Gujarat over last several years and organising such a tournament will help us in reviving the national game here.
