A supporter of the SUCI was today killed in a clash allegedly with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters over harvesting of paddy here in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district and eight people were arrested in connection with the incident.

Police said the clash occurred at Koikhali village when Himanshu Haldar, a TMC worker, "forcibly" tried to harvest paddy from the fields cultivated by share-cropper and SUCI supporter Subhas Das.

Six persons, including Das, were injured when the latter, along with his family members and villagers, tried to put up a resistance.

A seriously wounded Das was rushed to a Kolkata hospital where he died during treatment, while the other five injured persons were still undergoing treatment, police said.

Eight persons were arrested in connection with the incident, police said, adding that Himanshu, however, was absconding.

Police personnel have been posted in the village as there was tension in the area.
