The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed Sudip Burman as the new Leader of the Opposition in Tripura Legislative Assembly replacing Ratan Lal Nath, party sources said today.

Burman (47), an engineering and a law graduate, is the son of former Tripura Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Burman and has been elected to the state assembly four times from the Agartala constituency since 1998.

Burman had resigned from the post of president of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) following the debacle of the party in the February 14 elections in the state this year.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has appointed tribal leader Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl as TPCC president and Ashish Saha as party's working president. Both of them are also legislators.

The Congress secured only ten seats in the sixty member assembly while the remaining of them were won by the ruling Left Front.
