There has been a reduction in energy shortages in the country during the last fiscal on the back of sufficient addition of power generation capacity, a top government official today said.

The major reason for reduction in energy shortage has been addition of power generation capacity, Power Secretary P K Pujari said.

"Against the target of 88,000 MW power generation capacity under the 12th plan period, there was 1 lakh MW capacity addition," Pujari added.

There has also been increase in renewable energy capacity, with a focus on energy efficiency like LED lamps, he said.

Energy shortage reduced from 4.2 per cent in 2013-14 to 0.7 per cent in 2016-17.
