Sugar 0.62% up in futures trade on spot demand

Sugar prices went up by 0.62 per cent to Rs 3,072 per quintal in futures market today as participants widened their bets, driven by pick up in demand in the spot market.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, sugar for delivery in March month rose by Rs 19 or 0.62 per cent to Rs 3,072 per quintal with an open interest of 1,10,340 lots.

On similar lines, the sweetener for delivery in May contracts traded higher by Rs 17 or 0.54 per cent to Rs 3,183 per quintal in 58,270 lots.

The rise in sugar prices in futures trade was mostly on pick up in demand from retailers as well as bulk consumers in the spot market, Analysts said.
