Sugar prices were higher by 0.57 per cent to Rs 2,846 per quintal in futures trade today amid pick up in demand from bulk consumers and retailers in the spot market.

However, persistent supplies from millers, limited the rise.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, sugar for delivery in May month rose Rs 16, or 0.57 per cent to Rs 2,846 per quintal with an open interest of 7,290 lots.

Similarly, the sweetener for delivery in March contract edged up by Rs 7, or 0.25 per cent to Rs 2,756 per quintal in 23,370 lots.

Market analysts said fresh positions built-up by speculators after demand improved in the spot market mainly influenced sugar prices at futures trade but higher supplies, limited the rise.
