Sugar millgate prices gained Rs 80 per quintal in the national capital today on the back of thin supply and brisk demand.
Marketmen said fall in supply from mills, sparked by heavy buying by stockists and bulk consumers such as soft-drink, ice-cream and sweet makers due to ongoing summer season, mainly led the rise in sweetener prices.
Less availability of sugarcane as farmers tend to shift alternative crops and divert supply to competing industries because of widening payment dues to farmers was also one of the reason behind the price rise, they added.
