Sugar prices traded higher 0.49 per cent to Rs 3,304 per quintal in futures trade today as participants indulged in creating fresh positions, tracking a firm trend at spot market on pick up in demand.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, sugar for delivery in far-month May went up by Rs 16, or 0.49 per cent to Rs 3,304 per quintal with an open interest of 91,780 lots.

On similar lines, the sweetener for delivery in March contracts traded higher by Rs 14, or 0.44 per cent to Rs 3,195 per quintal in 78,850 lots.

Analysts said fresh positions built up by traders, driven by pick up in demand from retailers as well as bulk consumers in the spot market mainly attributed the rise in sugar prices at futures trade.
