Sugarcane growers in Cuddalore protest seeking dues

Sugarcane growers in the district today staged a protest here seeking the disbursement of over Rs 420 crore due to be paid to them by four sugar mills here.

District President of Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers' Association, K Madhavan told reporters that three private sugar mills and one Co-op Sector mill have not disbursed the arrears to the tune of Rs 420 crore, till date.

Demanding the arrears the farmers staged a protest infront of all sugar mills.

Though the Cuddalore District Collector TP Rajesh had ordered the mills to disburse the amount before Deepavali, the amount has not been paid, he said.
 

Our next course of agitation will be announced soon, he added.

Meanwhile, the private mill owners have informed that they are seeking financial assistance from state government owing to the crisis in sugar industry following drop in sugar prices.
