Citing preoccupation with other engagements, eminent economist Sugata Marjit today resigned as the chairman of the State Higher Education Council and said that the resignation was not due to any difference with the state government.

"I have informed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of my decision," Marjit said at a press conference where state education minister Bryata Basu was also present.

Denying rumours about his alleged difference with the state government, especially Basu, over various policies, Marjit said, "My resignation is not due to any difference with the state government or the minister. I am always ready to help the state government in my own capacity," he said.

"To be honest, I am thankful to the state government, the Chief Minister and the education minister for the opportunity they had given me. The kind of independence that they gave me to work is exceptional. They have always been very helpful and cooperative," said Marjit.

When Basu was asked that in the past two years, pro-change educationists such as Sunanda Sanyal and others have resigned after being reportedly disappointed with the government, Bratya Basu said, "I can't say anything on this. Now see, Sugata has just said why he resigned. Now If I say anything it won't be right.
