Iraqi officials say a suicide car bomb attack on a police station has killed four policemen and wounded seven.

Police officials say the bomber rammed his explosive- laden car today into the main entrance checkpoint near the city of Mishada, 30 kilometres north of the capital, also wounding 7.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media.

Violence has been escalating in Iraq and last year, the country saw its highest death toll since the worst of the country's sectarian bloodletting began to subside in 2007.

On April 30, Iraq is to hold its first parliamentary elections since the withdrawal of US troops in late 2011.

Iraq's electoral commission said today that there will be no balloting in parts of the Sunni-dominated Anbar province engulfed in clashes between security forces and al-Qaida-inspired militants.
