In a condolence message, he said Khanna, who hailed from holy city Amritsar, had redefined romantic films and mesmerised the world to emerge as the first superstar of Bollywood.
In his death, the country had lost a jewel and the void created by his death would be difficult to fill, Badal said.
Khanna, ailing for sometime, died at his Bandra residence in Mumbai earlier in the day at the age of 69.
