Touched by the tale of a girl whose father had to mortgage land to conduct her marriage from their house which was damaged in the April 21 storm, sanitation group Sulabh International today announced Rs 5 lakh assistance to the father to help him rebuild his dwelling.

The marriage of Anju, a resident of Kachauli village in storm-ravaged Purnea district Kachauli village, was fixed with a boy of Araria district earlier and all preparations were in place but the late night squall brought havoc.

Her house in Dagarua block was damaged in the tropical storm late on Tuesday night along with others.

Moved by the plight of the girl's family, the groom's father had offered to solemnise the marriage at a temple. But, the distraught father did not agree and decided to marry his daughter from the house itself.

He mortgaged his four bigha land and raised money for the marriage which was performed last night.

After reading the news of the girl's marriage under the trying conditions, Sulabh International founder Bindeshwar Pathak announced Rs 5 lakh assistance to the distraught father Yogendra Biswas, a Sulabh International statement said here.

It said Pathak would give Rs 5 lakh cheque to Biswas in Patna on Sunday.

The statement quoted the Sulabh founder as saying the assistance was aimed at comforting Anju that the house in which she was born and from where she was married, would be resurrected.

Altogether 38 people have been killed in Purnea alone out of 55 dead due to the high speed storm in Bihar. A large number of houses have been damaged in the storm.
