Sumitra Mahajan to participate in World Speakers' Conference

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan would be participating in the preparatory committee of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)'s Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at Geneva next month.

Sumitra Mahajan will participate in the third meeting of the preparatory committee of IPU's fourth world conference of Speakers of Parliament at Geneva on June 1 and 2, an official release said here today.

IPU, Geneva will be convening the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament - a global summit focusing on democracy, role of legislative institutions and their relationship with the United Nations. The Conference will take place in August-September, 2015.
 

To go ahead with the preparations of the conference, the statement said, IPU has constituted a Preparatory Committee composed of distinguished Speakers. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, is a member of the Preparatory Committee.

While the first meeting of the preparatory committee was held in January, 2014 at Geneva, the second meeting was held in November last year in New York.

During the meeting of the preparatory committee, the Presiding Officers will consider and approve the agenda and draft outcome document of the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, the release said.

The participants will also interact with officials of United Nations on the inter-connection between the Speakers' Conference and the UN Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals, it added.
