Sunstroke toll mounts to 28 in Odisha

Though temperatures fell at most places across Odisha, the mercury level refused come down in the state settling at 40.2 degrees Celsius, while the sun stroke death toll mounted to 28.

Bhubaneswar continued to remain the hottest place in the state for the second consecutive day with the relative humidity ratio remaining static at 89 per cent.

However, the IMD predicted a fall of temperatures in Bhubaneswar tomorrow though the humidity ratio would continue to at around 89 per cent.

An IMD release said temperatures fell in most places including Titlagarh, which recorded the highest temperature of 47 deg C last week.
 

The IMD forecast said heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in interior Odisha during the next 24 hours and temperature of Bhubaneswar was likely to come down to 37 degrees Celsius.

The state's Special Relief Commissioner's (SRC) office confirmed the death of 28 people due to sunstroke across Odisha. The revenue department has also received reports of alleged deaths of 135 people due to heat related incidents.

While the highest number of seven sunstroke casualties were confirmed from the Ganjam district, it was followed by six in Kendrapara, four in Bargarh and two each in Cuttack and Rayagada districts.

Besides this, one sunstroke death each was confirmed by the Collectors of Angul, Balasore, Balangir, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Nuapada and Puri districts, the SRC officials said adding of the 135 cases, 35 deaths took place due to some other reasons and 72 other cases were under investigation of District Collectors.
