A 26-year-old supporter of former UP BJP chief Surya Pratap Shahi today tried to immolate himself protesting against the denial of party ticket to the leader.

Amit Singh, an MBA, raised slogans against BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and party nominee Kalraj Mishra at Subhash Chowk here and poured kerosene over himself.

However, he was overpowered by the locals.

Singh had announced earlier that he would resort to the extreme step.

There was resentment among some party workers here after denial of ticket to Shahi. BJP picked party veteran Mishra from the seat.

Meanwhile, Mishra arrived here today amid warm reception by the party workers.
