A sweeper working with a reputed jewellery showroom in city was today arrested within a few hours after he allegedly stole ornaments worth Rs 1.5 crore from the shop, police said.

"The accused, identified as Prashant Varde, continued to remain inside the showroom after the closing hours last night and stole jewellery and cash amounting to Rs 10,000 before escaping from the window," Surat Commissioner of Police Satish Sharma told reporters here today.

Varde was arrested by police within hours after the showroom management learned about the theft today morning on opening the store located on Ghod-dod road of the city, said the official.

Investigation revealed that Varde, a resident of Limbayat, was hired as a sweeper 15 days back through a contractor.

When the staff opened the showroom today, they realised about the theft and informed Umara police station. As Varde did not turn up for work, he came under the scanner of police.

"We quickly zeroed in on Varde and nabbed him within hours. We have recovered all the stolen booty and cash from him," said Sharma.
