Press Trust of India Kolkata
City-based GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly outwitted Cuban GM Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suarez in a battle of nerves to win the second International Grandmasters Chess Tournament here today.

Surya, who was in the lead with Nigel Short and Lu Shanglei, opened up the kingside in a Sicilian defence and his two bishops ensured an attack which fetched him a pawn after which it was a matter of time as the Indian GM finished the winner with 7.5 points.

On the top board, Short and Shanglei had a quiet affair after both the players opted for a Catalan set up.

With neither of them getting a breakthrough, the duo agreed for a truce on the 41st move.

Short, Shanglei, Deep Sengupta and Sandipan Chanda finished tied second but the British GM was adjudged runner-up on better Buchole tie breaking points.

Chinese GM Shanglei and Deep Sengupta were declared third and fourth respectively.
