Senior Bihar BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi today suggested that the Bihar government set up a organ transplant facility in one of the state's premiere medical institutes to facilitate organ donation and transplantation in the state.

Speaking on the occasion of the World Organ Donation Day, Modi exhorted people to come forward to make a pledge to donate their organ/body to give a "gift of life" to others even after their deaths.

"Pledge your organs and live a second life by giving a gift of life to others through organ donation. This is the only way one can play second inning even after one's death," Modi said while speaking at a function organised by Dadhichi Deh Dan Samiti which works to propagate the importance of organ donation.

Modi, who along with noted physician Dr S N Arya took a pledge to give their body/organs on the occasion, also asked people to convince their family members to get ready for this.

Modi, the former Deputy Chief Minister, honoured several family members of those who donated their eyes.

Modi also honoured state's Labour Resources Department's Principal Secretary Dipak Kumar Singh who donated his father's body in 2014.

Former Deputy CM asked the government to set up eye bank and transplant centre in all the private and government medical colleges of the state.

Besides, the government should also set up transplant institute either at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna and Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Patna in order to train doctors for giving brain stem death certificate, retrieval of organs and transplantation.

He suggested driving license should mention as whether the person wanted to donate or not and which organs.

IGIMS Director Dr N R Biswas said the institute will have the facility of 'heart transplant' by Diwali this year. Besides, it will also startstate's first organ bank.

Patna high court Justice (rtd) J N Singh emphasised on the need to give adequate publicity to the issue of organ donation among the people throughout the year and not on a particular day in a closed hall.
