Suspected burglar lynched by mob in Mumbai; one held

A suspected burglar was lynched by a mob when he was caught trying to break into a local shop by residents of Abhyudayanagar at Cotton Green, police said today.

According to police, one of the attackers has been arrested on the charge of killing.

A police officer at Kalachowkie police station in central Mumbai said the incident took place at Abhyudayanagar at Cotton Green in the early hours of Friday when the victim was trying to break into a local shop.

"A local resident Pandurang Kale spotted him while he was trying the break open the shutter using a chisel-like tool. Kale immediately raised an alarm and soon 20 others gathered at the site and started thrashing and kicking him," the officer said.
 

In the meantime, some locals informed the Kalachowkie police station but by the time police reached to the spot, the burglar was lying unconscious, he said.

"He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead on admission," the officer said, adding a case of murder under section 302 of IPC and Kale was arrested.

"We are in the process of identifying others involved in this assault," he said, adding also efforts were on to establish the identity of the deceased.
