In a suspected case of honour killing, a teenage girl was allegedly murdered by her family members in a village in Sonipat district as they were opposed to her relationship with a youth, police said today.

The girl and the youth in question were both Dalits, but belonged to different sub-castes, the police said.

The incident took place on Saturday in Mehmoodpur village, Sonipat's Superintendent of Police, Ashwin Shenvi said over the phone.

"We have booked some members of the girl's family on murder charge on the complaint from the youth," he said.

Shenvi said that the complainant, aged around 21 years, has stated that he and the girl, aged around 17-18 years, were having an affair for the past few months.

Both were Dalits, belong to different sub-castes, the SP said.

"When the girl parents got to know of their relationship, they raised an objection," he said.

The girl's family has claimed that the teenager committed suicide, but the youth's family alleged that the girl's parents had killed her. The youth's family claimed that the girl was murdered and was later cremated in haste," he said.

Shenvi said that after registering a case of murder, police was making further investigations.

No arrests have been made so far.
