A 55-year-old man, suspected to be a thief, was beaten to death in Sarol village, police said today.

"A person, who was suspected to be a thief, was beaten to death by villagers in Sarol village in Anand," Sub-Inspector J B Gadhvi of Bhadran Police Station said.

The police has filed an FIR and booked 15 villagers in this connection.

The deceased, identified as Babu Talpada, was caught last night with his 22-year-old son Lalu from a house owned by one Lakshman Jadhav in Sarol village, Gadhvi said.

Jadhav alleged that the father-son duo are "thieves" and called other villagers who started beating Talpada and his son, Gadhvi said.

The son managed to flee the spot, while his father was tied to a tree and beaten until he died, Gadhvi said.

The police has registered a murder case against 15 villagers after a complaint by Lalu, he said.

According to the complaint, Lalu and his father had stopped near a house to drink water when the house owner suspected them to be thieves and began shouting which led a mob killing his father.

The police has sent the body for post-mortem, the SI said.
