A special court today dismissed a bail petition of suspended Bharathiar University Vice- Chancellor A Ganapathy, who was arrested days ago on bribery charges.
When the petition came up before the court of Prevention of Corruption Act, special Judge John Mino rejected the bail petitions of Ganapthay and another accused, professor Dharmaraj.
Ganapathy was arrested on February 3 for allegedly accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from an aspirant for the post of an assistant professor.
He is lodged in the central jail along with Chemistry professor Dharmaraj who allegedly brokered the deal.
Opposing the bail plea, the prosecution argued that there was apprehension that the petitioners would tamper with the evidence if enlarged on bail.
It said some notes (which were smeared with chemicals to help identification), part of the bribe money of Rs one lakh, were torn and thrown into a sewage tank, in front of officials by Ganapathy's wife, during a search operation at his residence.
Hearing arguments from both sides, the Judge declined to grant bail to the duo.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) filed a petition in the court, seeking five days custody of the two accused, which will come up for hearing tomorrow.
In a related development, 20 people have lodged complaints with the DVAC against Ganapathy alleging that he had taken money for recruitment.
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit had on February 6 suspended Ganapathy, saying charges levelled against the academic were "serious.
